This amazing lamp tutorial has been updated since it was originally posted in 2014. This lamp really catches my eye! I won a grand prize in the Instructable contest , was taken to a special event in Atlanta, Georgia, and won a great selection of Home Depot equipment. Inspired by me, several people sent me photos of their lamps. So I do what I do!

I opened up an old board... and there were large blocks of wood between the layers. It was kept in piles of junk mail and burned. Last weekend we lit a fire in the fireplace and I found a bug!

Instantly, she turned into a restored rustic wooden lamp in my mind... and I saved her from poisoning!

Step 1 - Dig a hole

Start by drilling a hole in the middle of the top of the wood, but not the bottom. Then drill from the back until you hit the hole in the middle. I don't measure or anything... it works!

Basically it involves drilling an "L" shaped hole through a block of wood.

I used a drag chain assembly and a threaded tube from the bottle light assembly to do this.

Step 2: Install the lamp set

After drilling the hole, use a small wire and fish from behind. Then tie the power cord to the rear cord and pass it through the hole. Pull gently so that the cord does not slip off the power cord.

Then put the hollow threaded tube around the cable and screw it into the hole in the top of the wooden block. It fits perfectly and is tight. Use pliers to tighten it perfectly.

Step 2 - Installing the Headlight Kit After you have drilled the hole, use a small wire and weigh it from the back up. Then tie the power cord to the rear cord and pass it through the hole. It fits perfectly and is tight. Use pliers to tighten it perfectly.

Step 3 - Connect the lights

Now follow the instructions to connect the electrical wiring to the lamp. Begin by threading the threaded pipe into the bottom of the main unit.

Then tie the electrical cord and give it the "security knot". Note the difference between the strings: one has ribbed cover and the other is smooth. This is important.

Step 3: Connect the Light Now follow the instructions to connect the electrical wires to the light. Begin by threading the threaded pipe into the bottom of the main unit. then bind and

Then connect the wires to the light socket/chain section of the pool. The silver screw accepts the ribbed wire and the smooth wire accepts the gold screw. (Again, please read the assembly instructions for my custom light, not the assembly instructions for my light.)

Then tie the security knot just below the connector so that it is firmly seated in the connector cover.

Then place the cap on the pool rope and press down until it snaps into the base cap.

Simply wrap a hook around the cable, loosen and remove the screw before tightening.

Step 4: Wash or Wood Stain

Now manage the wooden blocks according to your choice. You can paint it one color, add a bit of wood stain, or rub a bit of finishing wax into the wood.

shark! Looks good. But the most important thing is to make sure the light really works! Just turn on a small lightbulb and plug it in to see if your wiring is correct.

I always pray when I plug it in... I hope everything works! Success - and best of all, it's incredible!

Step 5: Heavenly Geometric Lampshade

The lamp is as perfect as this one...but I figured the homemade geometric lampshade would do the trick!

I created Himeli's geometric shades using sterilizing coffee straw and fine floral thread. Ratna is a Finnish mobile phone traditionally made from rye straw. It's actually made out of a plastic straw, not a cell phone... but whatever.

It is an icosahedral geometric shadow.

I started by cutting my halves in half...3 1/2 inches. You use a rotary cutter and put it on a cutting mat, then it works great to cut all at once.

Following,
Untie a yard or meter of cable.

Then sew 3 straws...twist the threads to form a triangle.

Then add 2 more and flip them to the other side to form a double triangle/rhombus.

Then add 2 more...roll and add 2 more...etc.

It sounds confusing, but once you get started it's very easy. Just cut the straw and make a triangle.

Until you have a triple power!

Then basically a set of 5 pipettes cutting with each straw. It takes a little practice, but it comes naturally. There are some double threads through the straw to take with you wherever you go.

But it's so much fun!

Each time you need more thread, simply wrap another length of thread this way. The straws cover all wire crossings and look great.

Great it would be such a fun genius. Place them on the mantel, the entryway table or use them as the focal point of an event like a wedding!

Now just put the screen in the light. The small bulb helps to fit perfectly without getting too hot in the light. LED lights are the way to go because they are not hot

You can leave a natural black shade on the geometric hemlock as shown in the image below. It feels good.

Step 6: Draw!

Or decide to sign it. I chose shiny gold. I used spray paint and slightly dampened the straw... let it dry
Repeat until everything is covered.

Use a thin coat of paint and let it dry so it doesn't spatter or peel.

Very cold. It really looks like a copper or brass pipe!

Who would have said those were plastic lollipops?

See how wonderful it is to have reflections on the walls!

I have received this lamp for 8 years. I still love it and use it. It survived all movements around the country and at home. I am very happy about it. It's small and simple and feels utterly stylish, but it's clearly made from reclaimed materials. This is definitely an observation deck!
