How to make a woven paper heart basket for Valentine's Day
This heart reed basket is a fun paper art I learned in third grade. We used giant construction paper to make hearts for our Valentine's Day boxes. A few sheets of tissue paper are enough to make this lovely heart. A delicious last minute surprise for Valentine's Day!
This favorite ingredient can be used to store snacks to send to neighbors and friends. You can also do it in paper form!
We present a video of the process. Examples and step-by-step instructions in the article.
Materials needed for woven paper hearts:
2 color parchment (does not work with cardboard)
Scissors
Step 1: Cut the heart in half
Start folding the paper in half so it's 5.5x8.5. You can print a sample of this paper and then cut it out of notepad. It should be 2.5 inches by 5 inches wide and have rounded corners at the top.
Then cut this shape into layers of colored paper, cut it into 2 identical long oval halves.
Fold the piece of paper in half.
Step 2: Make 2 incisions in each half of the heart.
Now make 2 long slots in each half of your heart. Almost above the curved edge. I just threw it in front of my eyes. In fact, you can cut different widths and get a completely different final effect, so go for it!
Let your weaver knit 4, 5, 6 or even 10 pieces together! Cut the lines with decorative scissors and give them different shapes!
The weaving process is a bit complicated because the container is opened carefully! Don't worry, it's very easy.
Not the usual 3D weave, from above. It's a bit difficult because it's all around. Create a large basket effect by knitting on both sides.
Step 3: Knit a heart out of paper
Hold the half of the paper heart as shown in the image below. Start with number 3 and push C through hole 3. Then push 2 from hole C. Then push C from hole 1.
Then keep touching from 3 to B, from B to 2, from 1 to B.
Complete the hearts by knitting A to 3, 2 to A and finally A to 1.
If it seems difficult, try a few times and you'll understand! Then look into your heart to make sure you're touching it right. It should open like a favorite little basket.
Optionally add a twist to the hanging basket. Fill it with food, hang it in a garland, feel a durable decor or make it giant with large sheets of paper!
Here's an entertaining idea:
Make the curve big enough to fit on someone's doorknob and you could be in for a nice surprise!
There she is! Not as much as you would like! Experiment with different numbers of knitting strips. For fun, for fun!
