How to Make Sublimation Mugs with Child's Art
How to make sublimation mugs from children's art.
Turn your child's precious work into perfect memory cups. A great way to turn a picture attached to a refrigerator into a useful treasure. These custom sublimation mugs also make great handmade gifts. Buy a sublimation printer , make these fun cups for Easter gifts, Thanksgiving gifts for teachers, Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthdays and more.
I'm sure you have plenty of artwork to immortalize on the glass.
The best part of this mug is safe in the dishwasher and microwave. Poor me
This is the biggest project I love. Maybe I like it so much because I made these mugs for my kids for Christmas. But I really think I made them for myself.
I found vintage artwork that each of my children painted as a child. I allow my children to open their glasses as their first Christmas present. I started with my oldest son. He painted a character we like to call a "business rabbit." He laughed when he opened it.
I repeated the image of the business rabbit in the glass 3 times to fill the space and make it more fun.
Next, I asked my youngest son to open the glass. He is surrounded by a little astronaut, a little spaceship of astronauts. I think this is the only photo my son has ever taken. She was so happy to find it in her pile of letters.
I like how he can say he painted it with a pencil, he painted with pencils.
I eventually let my daughter open the cup. He is a YouTube animator. He earns money on his Kazoo Does Art YouTube channel and has more than 100,000 subscribers.
You've watched my kids open their glasses, and over the years you've wondered in your repertoire of art projects what could be in your glass.
That's how it is! Your terrifying/emo version of the Teletubbies. I love these guys. It looks like a bag that closes with a drawstring.
He painted them separately, but I scanned them all together into one image for sublimation.
You don't love her!

Children's works (digitized, scanned or copied, then printed on a sublimation printer)
Step 1. Create a sublimation printer .
Start setting up the sublimation printer. Requires special ink and paper. It may seem complicated, but it is actually quite simple.
Here is the complete installation guide.
Step 2. Print the images in reverse order.
After installing the sublimation printer , use sublimation paper and print the images by rotating them.
However, rotate images horizontally so they print upside down. So if you wrap the inkwell, the text and images will be oriented correctly.
*This is similar to using Cricut Infusible Ink frames as in this post.
** Sublimation inks are special and heat activated so the print will look very opaque. Don't worry.
Step 3. Stick the sublimation paper to the mug.
Cut the sublimation paper as needed to fit the mug. Images must be 8.5 x 4 inches for these 15 ounces. Cups.
Then wrap the image so that the ink side comes into contact with the ceramic mug. Then use heat resistant tape to secure it to the edges and top to bottom.
Step 4. Use the Cricut Cup Press.
Turn on the Cricut Mug Press - Wait until it is fully heated and green light when ready. If it doesn't get hot, plug it into your computer and download the updated driver.
Now insert the cup into the Cricut Mug Press and close the clamp. It will take about 5 minutes to fully heat the glass to sublimate the image. Wait until all 5 lights are on and the car beeps. Then loosen the cup and gently remove it from the press.
Very hot: Reserve to cool naturally.
Repeat the heating process for as many glasses as you like. This is actually a very quick project - it can be done in the interval between unloading and loading the dishwasher.
Let the mugs cool completely again before removing the sticky tape: paper. It's hard to maintain, especially if you die to make sure it works.
I understand. Just take one, then take a shower, clean the house, sleep, watch a show or game...then pull out the paper and see how it all turned out. So do the rest of the sublimation mugs.
Step 5. Great find.
This is, frankly, the best part of the world. It's so nice to see how children's art comes to life in a circle. Remove the heat resistant tape from the sublimation paper.
Repeat the detection process for all of your sublimation mugs.
I inspired you to try. This is a great technique, but there are plenty of other things you can do with a sublimation printer, so don't be afraid to invest.
I'll be talking about other fun things throughout the year: the holiday season is coming up. The same technique works with any sublimation target. Check out this post for a list of great sublimation blanks. Make sure they are labeled "Sublimation" as they have a special coating that makes them work. Otherwise, the sky is the limit.
Shirts, cushions, mugs, key chains, puzzles and more. Make the holidays that much more personal - with "handmade" photos, pictures and special memories from the past.
Now your head is full of great ideas for sublimation.
Mine too.
I have lots of fun ideas, a craft room full of accessories... and for a limited time. pooh.
But I am so happy that I made these memory mugs for my kids...or myself.
